Gillian Felix's FAMILY PORTRAIT SERIES Blog Tour & Giveaway

Guest Post

by

Gillian Felix
The Birth of Family Portrait Novels
As a child I used to hate doing the dishes (I still do), to get out of doing them, I used to bribe my younger sister with a story if she’d do them for me. While she did them, I would pull up a chair, and tell her stories of cool American kids who lived in Los Angeles. Why LA? I don’t know, I didn’t know anywhere else, plus we used to get television shows filmed in Hollywood and everything seemed so sparkly and nice. And so the Banovic, the DaCostas and the Malone family was born.

Over the years the story has evolved, the Banovic, DaCosta and Malone kids have grown up and started families of their own. With all the family history between them I figured it would be fantastic to capture that in a story. I’d written the story from so many angles over the years and in 2010, I decided to focus on their off springs, living in the present time.

When I queried the first book to agents, I had written the main character, Adriana Banovic as a young, hot, up and coming actress making a name for herself on the Hollywood circuit. Several rejection letters later, I decided to turn it into a television series.

Made for TV

In the TV version I wrote Adriana as a 15 year-old, washed up soap star, forced to fit in at a prestigious high school. I pitched it to a couple of production companies and got interest but they wanted it to be more of a half-hour comedy format.

I had already written 2 seasons worth of material with it as a dramedy, and changing it to their format would completely change where I felt the story could go. I had envisioned a Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, Beverly Hills 90210 type show. At that time I entered the pilot script into a British TV writing competition and it place in the top 10 out of 4000!

Fast forward to 2013, frustrated with Hollywood and traditional publishing, I decided to self-publish.

Birth of the novel series

I changed the pilot script into the first novel, Changes. Readers enjoyed it and expressed interest in reading more so I released The Banovic Siblings and shortly after Bastard’s Brew. The forth novel The Perfect Escape will be released later this year.

While the novel series has its funny moments, it is much darker than the script. I made Adriana an angst ridden teenage trouble maker, and bumped up her eldest brother Kevin’s character into a drug dealing bad boy, who gets himself tangled up with the wrong woman. There is still a lot of drama to come with the Banovic, DaCosta and Malone kids all leading up to the final book, where Adriana is a 21 year-old up and coming actress, who has made a name for herself in Hollywood.

I hope readers will enjoy Adriana's journey to adulthood and stardom.

Changes
Adriana Banovic’s 15th birthday sucked! She got fired after eight years of

playing Shayanne Montgomery on the #1 soap in the country, found out that her family was on the verge of bankruptcy and worst of all, forced to return to Westwood Academy. Her only saving grace was a chance glance at dreamy mystery boy Haze Lyndon. Armed with only his picture and a determination to find him—even if it means turning Los Angeles over on its ass.
In this new adult novel you'll meet Robin Banovic, Adriana's father; financially challenged, dealing with the death of a family member and his brother's disappearance. You'll meet Savannah DaCosta aka Savi, mother/manager; Savi enjoys the life her rock star daughter Leighann has provided. When Leighann makes a choice to end her career, Savi sees it as a personal attack.
You'll meet college boy Haze Lyndon; New to Los Angeles, Haze soon realizes how quickly money changes hands in the City of Angels. Will he return to questionable ways to survive or go back to the safety of his family in Wisconsin?

Excerpt: Down the hall, Adriana waited for her turn to audition. The place still had lots of girls even though the process seemed to be going by quickly. She got up to stretch her legs and get some water at the water fountain down the hall.

She noticed a photo shoot taking place in the room adjacent to the water fountain. Curious, she headed toward the window and peered through the glass.

Everything was random, large floodlights illuminated a gray backdrop cloth. The room was divided into two parts by a portable screen room divider with an opening at either end. The dimly lit back room was closest to the room entrance; there was a table with a laptop and camera equipment, story boards, a notebook and other items.

Adriana spotted the photographer, a handsome-ish petite Italian talking to his butch assistant, dressed all in black. She was about to walk away when she spotted Haze. Her eyes fixated on him. He emerged wearing jeans and a graphic tee. Adriana was simply mesmerized by him. He was the handsomest man she had ever seen. She entered the room for a closer look. ‘Was he for real?’

The photographer instructed Haze on the next set-up. At first no one noticed Adriana as she stood in the shadows. She was unable to take her eyes off him. ‘Who is he?’ she wondered.

The photographer received his freshly reloaded camera from his assistant. Just then Adriana noticed a Polaroid of Haze on the floor; she picked it up and stared at it. Her fingers traced his smile. His brown eyes were lit up, and a naughty but sweet smile blanketed his face. Adriana felt her inside get soft and mushy; she felt a flash of heat and excitement. This was new territory for her. Whoever he was, she knew she would never forget him.

The butch assistant interrupted her thoughts with a disapproving tone. “What are you doing in here?!”

Adriana was startled.

“You're not supposed to be in here. This is a closed shoot! Get out!”

Adriana slipped the picture into her pocket, then left.

The Banovic Siblings
College boy Kevin Banovic’s casual affair with Savi DaCosta suited him

perfectly. Things change when he finds out that Savi is his mom’s high school bestie. When Kevin tries to end their affair, Savi blackmails him. After Kevin rescues Savi’s stepdaughter, L’Wren, from her abusive boyfriend, he can’t stop thinking about her. He must find a way to handle Savi, protect L’Wren, and keep his sanity.
Bad girl Adriana Banovic is pleased with herself for getting her nemesis expelled from Westwood Academy. As feelings between her and her latest victim Haze Lyndon escalate, an unexpected rival discovers her secret and threatens to expose her. With emotions on the line, will her new rival beat her at her own game or end up another casualty of Adriana’s wrath?
Zax Banovic has it all. Tall and handsome, he’s an academic genius, with a killer smile and a heart of gold. When his best friend gets into trouble, he feels responsible and covers for him. But his best friend is not as honorable and has other plans for Zax.
The Banovic Siblings learn that blackmail is a gift that keeps on giving.

Bastard’s Brew
When L'Wren's ex-boyfriend Jeff suddenly disappears, she turns to Kevin to

help her find him. With one phone call, Kevin makes sure that Jeff stays hidden and that L'Wren's heart is broken, leaving the door open for Kevin to pursue her. But Kevin is not as free as L'Wren thinks; she is in the dark about his affair with her stepmother, Savi. Savi constantly reminds Kevin of his devious ways and uses their secret to keep him as her toyfriend.
“You don’t deserve to be loved, and you don’t deserve to be happy. You and I are the same … we’re broken inside. Everything we touch, we destroy. We don’t get happily ever after … we don’t get to ride off into the sunset. You know who gets that? L’Wren … she gets it, she gets the guy, and she deserves a decent guy.”- Savi
Kevin desires to be the man that L'Wren deserves, but before he can assume the role of white knight, he brews one last plan to get rid of Savi for good. Will L'Wren, the innocent victim in their twisted game, become a casualty?
Kevin may have sold his body to the devil in stilettos, but he'd be damned if he let her have his heart.

Johanna Parkhurst's EVERY INFERNO Tour

Every Inferno
Author: Johanna Parkhurst
 Genre: Young Adult, Mystery, LGBTQ

Depressed. Defiant. Possible alcoholic. These are just a few of the terms used to describe fifteen-year-old Jacob Jasper Jones. Lately, though, JJ has a new one to add to the list: detective. He’s been having strange dreams about the fire that killed his parents ten years ago, and he thinks he finally has the clue to catching the arsonist who destroyed his family.
A murder investigation isn’t the only thing the dreams trigger for JJ, though. They also lead to secret meetings with his estranged sister, an unlikely connection with a doctor who lost his daughter in the fire, and a confusing friendship with McKinley, a classmate of JJ’s who seems determined to help him solve the mystery.
All JJ wants is to shake the problems that have followed him since that fire, and he’s convinced he must catch the arsonist to do it. But as JJ struggles to find the culprit, he sees there’s more than one mystery in his life he needs to solve.

Excerpt:

A smell that wasn’t there before filled the bathroom.
JJ drew in a deep breath, trying to match the scent to anything that might already exist in his short memory. It was a difficult scent to describe: like pine trees, but not the real ones in his backyard. More like the smell of the stuff his father used to clean the kitchen floor.
He tried to push off the sudden sense of apprehension that filled him; who cared if someone else had also come into the restroom? This was his town, the tiny world he had spent his entire five years in, and there was a good chance he knew whoever else had just joined him.
Even if he didn’t know anyone who went around smelling like pine trees.
JJ took a few breaths and flushed the toilet, eager to get back to the movie and his parents.
As he shoved the door of the stall open, though, the scent grew stronger. The person who had brought the scent in with him—a man—was facing the wall across the room. He was wearing a backpack and hugging his arms to his chest.
“I did it… I did it,” the man whispered. “I finally did it.”
JJ moved to the sinks, more eager than ever to return to the comforting gaze of his mother. But the noise of his sneakers against the tile alerted the man to JJ’s presence, and now the stranger was turning around to face him.
It was the oddest sensation to only be able to see certain details of a person: blue jeans, a red long-sleeve shirt. And then a detail so clear it almost seemed to be the only thing JJ could see: the outline of a long and winding paintbrush, tattooed on the man’s hand, snaking down from just below his thumb to where it disappeared beneath the cuff of his shirt.
But nothing else. No other details were there. The man was faceless. The color of hair was… what was it? It was as if it had never been there.
Then JJ could see nothing, and all he could hear was the man shouting. Something about how JJ shouldn’t be there, and he couldn’t know, and it wasn’t time yet….
The pain began then. Horrible, burning, pain, and JJ knew he was screaming, but he couldn’t hear himself over the roaring in his ears. He needed to find the door, the door, where was the door—
Jacob Jasper Jones woke up sweating, twisted into a trap of sheets and blankets. He frantically cast his eyes around the walls of his bedroom, looking for anything that would remind him he was not in that restroom again. There was the Modest Mouse poster, his bookshelf, the old dresser that had once belonged to his aunt—yes, he was safe.
Safe from what? Or who?
JJ quietly wrestled with the covers, thankful that he wasn’t a screamer and didn’t seem to have woken Aunt Maggie up. If it was up to JJ, Maggie would never know that JJ was having dreams about that day again.
They’d started about a month ago. Before then JJ had never dreamed anything specific about the fire. The nightmares were always vague and mushy, filled with flames and noise and not much else.
Not like this dream. This dream was clear and specific and so real it was as though JJ was reenacting every detail from that day. Right up until the end, when the faceless man turned and everything went black.
It was so vivid that JJ was starting to think it might be more than just a dream. That it might be a memory.

America’s Haunted Destinations — Old Town San Diego
I’ve had the privilege of living in some of America’s most haunted cities. Yet I’ve never (yep—never) had a paranormal experience beyond simple events that can be written off as a trick of the eye or the light or just plain old imagination. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been looking for the paranormal most of my life. Ghosts have fascinated me since early childhood. So in this series of posts I’ll reveal some of the haunted destinations I’ve visited in my search for the supernatural.
The Whaley House in San Diego, CA is supposedly one of the most haunted destinations in America. When I was in high school, my drama group did plays at The Old Town Theatre just a block or so away from The Whaley House. Late night rehearsals were the norm two weeks prior to show time. We were all quite adventurous, and after rehearsals, we’d walk around Old Town looking for ghosts.
One night we were standing outside The Whaley House when we saw a curtain flutter in an upstairs window. That curtain was moving… definitely no trick of the light there! Other than that, the house was dark and appeared deserted. My friends freaked out and took off running back to the theater. I, on the other hand, was fascinated. Had they stayed, they would have seen the gentleman part the curtain and wave at me. Sorry to say, he was no ghost (I’m sure he’s happy about that fact, though).

Did you know that The Whaley House offers night tours and ghost tours? Even back then they happened every few months. His name was Warren, a student from SDSU, there with a group of students for a parapsychology class. He was quite nice (not to mention rather cute—hard for a high school girl to resist an adorable college guy). Warren came outside to see what we were doing. Since my fair-weather friends abandoned me at eleven-thirty at night, he walked me back to my car. So I didn’t see a ghost, but I made an interesting friend that night.
Old Town is full of intriguing places. There’s a tiny, old cemetery down the block from The Whaley House that has several children’s graves. The El Campo Santo cemetery was used between 1850–1888. Even today people stop by and leave toys for the children and flowers for the graves. Some of San Diego’s most prominent founding families are buried here.
Casa de Estudillo is another interesting place. Set up as a museum with décor appropriate for the time period, it offers an inside look at aristocratic life in the 1800s. Many people have taken odd phots in this old structure. Orbs, streaks, and riots of color are not uncommon. My photos all came out pristine on my visit last year.

When you’re finished ghost hunting, stop at Coyote Café for some yummy Mexican food and great big Margaritas! If you’re under twenty-one, the virgin strawberry Margarita is quite good.

Excerpt:
Closing my locker, I nod and smile at him, trying to hide my anxiety. Why did I agree to go to this club meeting? What if they sacrifice goats to some pagan god or something? Laughter wells up within at the absurd image of an animal sacrifice occurring on the third floor of the Sciences building. Besides, it couldn’t be a goat—it would have to be a cat or a fetal pig since that’s what the AP biology class is dissecting this year. I guess it could be a crawfish or an earthworm since the regular biology classes dissect those.

My laughter finally bubbles out when I picture figures in black robes sacrificing an earthworm to their pagan god. I feel Logan’s eyes on me. When I glance at him, he has a strange, indecipherable look on his face.

Accession by Terah Edun Blog Tour

Accession

(Sarath Web series, bk #1)
By Terah Edun

Blurb: Sixteen-year-old Katherine Thompson wasn’t trained to rule a coven. That was her sister – perfect, beautiful Rose. But when a mysterious plane crash kills off the heir presumptive of the Sandersville coven she has no choice.

After stepping in to fill her sister’s shoes, Katherine realizes she didn’t have a clue – faery wars, depressed trolls and angry unicorns are just the beginning.

For centuries, her family has served the high Queens on both sides of the Atlantic but it is a well-known rule that mid-level witches stay away from high-level Queens.
But when Katherine’s youngest cousin vanishes without a trace in the Atlanta court and no one wants to investigate, Katherine decides to step into the darkness on her own. She will soon discover that nothing, in a queen's court, is as it seems.

ExcerptAs Mrs. Peabody narrowed her eyes, sniffed, and then turned to pick on another student, Katherine drifted off. In a daydream, a memory, a premonition, or something that was all of those things in one. She watched through the frosty window as a maelstrom of black clouds, heavy lightning, and rain appeared in the morning sky.

For a moment she felt a sharp pain, the same kind she felt when her mother had fractured her knee surveying corn last week. She’d known the moment the Queen of Sandersville had fallen and had felt her mother’s pain from miles away. She had asked Rose about it later. After chiding her about releasing a powerful flare of magic in response and setting an acre of forest on fire in the process, as if Katherine had had a choice, Rose had explained that she’d also started to sense the pain of others late in her fifteenth year.

But this ache was different. It was worse, and she had no idea what was causing it. Then she felt her gifts rise. The dark gifts. The dangerous part of her that was her witch’s gift. The part of every witch and warlock’s magic that was innate to them, unique to them. That one special gift that made every coven member different from the rest. That couldn’t be duplicated with spells or trapped with magic. Rose’s was her affinity to plants. Their mother’s was her command over earth. But Katherine’s was unlike either of those. It wasn’t weird and unique, like Thu Kim’s ability to awaken awareness in inanimate objects, or cool, like Connor’s telepathy. No, hers was a call. A call that brought destruction in its wake.

With a shock, Katherine snapped out of her vision. She could feel her power building in a swirl of darkness in the pit of her stomach. Like a twister, it was ready to emerge. Standing up in a hurry, she ran between the desks in an effort to get out the door. To get somewhere quiet. Somewhere safe where she wouldn't hurt anybody.

She was holding on by a thread.

A thread that broke when Mrs. Peabody snapped, “Katherine Thompson, sit down!”

Character Interview with Restraint and Revelation’s Callan St. Michael.

Since The Revelation Series’s Callan St. Michael is fast becoming a fan favorite, we thought it would be a lot of fun to have an interview with him today. Most of these questions come directly from the readers. We hope by having him answer them, you will get to know him a little better.

Me: Hi Callan. Thanks so much for being here today.
Callan: Thanks for having me. I’m very happy to be here.

Me: Why don’t we start with something easy. Can you tell readers a little more about yourself?
Callan: Sure. My name is Callan St. Michael. I’m a protector with the London clan of gargoyles, along with my brother’s Keegan and Asher. Our current assignment is to protect Eve Collins. I’m currently mated to my girl, Abby Connor. I have blue eyes, brown hair and I’m a Leo. Oh, and I also love Reeses Peanut Butter cups. Freezing them though is the key to my heart. Just a little tidbit for all the ladies out there (winks in amusement).

Me: Speaking of Abby, I’m sure that the readers would love to learn how you and she met.
Callan: Well...to be honest...she threw mud at me. In all fairness, it was in retaliation to my telling her, at five- years old, I didn’t play with girls. She flat out got pissed and threw the mud right in my face. I totally started balling because it got in my eye and if you’ve ever had mud in your eye, you know it stings. Anyway, she immediately said she was sorry. Then took my hand in hers before kissing me on the cheek and vowing it would be all right, I was in love. That is, until she screamed Vivian (my mom’s name) and Mom loudly in my ear until both came running. Then, I found her annoying and ignored her until we got older. (releases soft laugh)

Me: That’s adorable. How do you like Eve? Since the rest of you have known one another for a long time?
Callan: Eves is a great addition to the family. We’re lucky to have the opportunity to protect her even though she and Asher are driving us all a little crazy at the moment. Plus she likes my cookies, and no, that’s not a metaphor. (smirks mysteriously).

Me: Readers are curious as to where you get your aprons. Do you have them made?
Callan: Ah...the aprons. Not to be vague, but I know someone. Though Keegan and Asher make fun of me for wearing them, I think they’re sexy. Am I right readers? (shoots a seductive look out)

Me: You’re brothers are each very different in personality than you. How do you all get along?
Callan: Well we’re brothers, we just get one another. Keegan and Asher can both be intense. In our line of work, letting your guard down can mean a whole lot of trouble. Keegan is really smart and excellent in strategy so at times I think that makes him come across as rigid. Asher is just broody and dark. Even before he met Eves. Now that she’s in the picture, he’s all kinda of emotionally unstable. I just run with the punches because no matter what, it’s us against the world.

Me: It’s rumored that there is a, certain piercing, shall we say, that Asher has. Is it true he got the piercing because he lost a bet with you?
Callan: Yes. That’s all I’m gonna say about that. (throws me a boyish grin)

Me: Anything you can share with us about what happens to your character in Restraint (book #2)?
Callan: Nothing specific. The author, Randi Cooley Wilson, she doesn’t allow us to say too much. She’s afraid we’ll ‘spoil’ her plot or twist and the reader won’t be surprised. I will say this, I have a new apron.

Me: (Laughs) Well, thanks so much for being here Callan.
Callan: A big thanks to all the readers who have read and fell for Revelation and hopefully, Restraint. I’m also extremely grateful to everyone who is TEAM CALLAN because it gets annoying listening to Asher boast about how everyone just LOVEEESSS him, and is all team Asher. So, thanks for having me today instead of him.

"Sleep Over" - Asher and Eve, Restraint Excerpt
I’m brushing my teeth when Asher swaggers into the bathroom. He leans his hip against the counter and just watches me. It’s starting to freak me out. I squint at him before spitting.
     “Can I help you?”
     “Huh?” he asks.
“You’re staring.” I tip my toothbrush at him.
“Am I?” He tilts his head to the side and crosses his arms.
I spit one last time and start my flossing routine and gargle my mouth rinse, all while Asher just stands there, observing me. Seriously, what’s he doing?
     “Curious about dental care?”
“Curious about you,” he shoots back.
     “Okay.”
He shrugs. “I like watching you do normal, everyday things.”
I blink. “Did you get clocked in training today?”
“No.” He slides his hands into the pockets of his pajama bottoms. “Want to have a sleep over?”
“Sleepover?” I repeat, less than enthused.
“Pajamas, pillow fights, gossip. You know, sleepover,” he clarifies, like I’m an idiot.
I sigh. “You’re freaking me out. What the hell is going on?”
He reaches for me and grabs the hem of my tank top, pulling me towards him. I stumble a bit and have to place my hands on his shoulders for balance as he tugs me closer. “I want you in my bed tonight. I was hoping you’d fall asleep in my arms.” His eyes lock onto mine.

Christina Mercer's HONEY QUEEN Book Tour

Honey Queen
Release Date: 05/31/14

Summary from Goodreads:
Love is honey sweet, but it comes with a fatal sting . . .
Melaina Maris needs wings to fly the gap between loving Sam and her family’s ancient curse that forces carnal love and then kills the male lovers. She won’t let the same fate that killed her father befall another. She refuses to allow her goddess-created bloodline to continue. But there’s no easy way out, especially after the curse turns her into the Honey Queen—savior to honey bees—intensifying her charms.
To help her fulfill the curse’s demands in the least harmful way, her grandmother takes her to mate with terminally ill Boyd. But Boyd’s gay. And an expert in mythology. Instead of having sex, Melaina learns how she might summon the goddess who created the first ancestor bee-charmer and cursed her bloodline. Melaina's magic—tears to save honey bees from endangerment—could be enough to persuade the goddess to end the curse. But an unexpected discovery soon changes that hope, spinning Melaina into a swarm of love, friendship and death.

Excerpt:
On my way home, I stop and grab the mail at the end of our drive, and Sam rolls up in his white pick-up with the words Leonard’s Dairy Ranch painted across the side.
“Hey, Mel,” he says, chocolate eyes melting my insides. “Been a while.”
I swallow hard, hoping the rush of heat to my face doesn’t show. “Yeah, well, I’m trying to graduate early, and you know, busy helping Gran.”
He nods, and his eyes flicker over my car. “You ever feel like riding shotgun in that thing, I’d be more than happy to take the wheel.”
I get back in my car and toss the mail on the seat next to me. “I’ll remember that.”
He laughs, and just as I shut the door, he calls out, “Go out with me.”
 Shit.
I take a deep breath and roll down the window. His brown shag drapes around his smile. His perfect, irresistible smile. “Sam, you’re my best friend. I don’t want to ruin that. Besides, I have to stay focused on school.”
“That’s bull, Mel, and you know it. Having a little fun isn’t going to turn you into your mom.”
He knows me well, has since I was in the first grade and he was in the second, but he still doesn’t know what I am. Gran calls us Apis charmers; I call us Apis slaves. And I’d bet him the pink slip to my car, he’d feel differently about dating me if he knew the truth.
“You’re right. I’m not going to end up like my mom, and the best way to make sure I don’t is to stay away from distractions.” With a wave, I speed down the drive.
I don’t realize how hard I’m biting my lip until I taste blood. Sometimes I wonder if it’d be easier to run away and let the sickness take me. Sam is pure torture—the sweetest hot fudge sundae, the rarest orchid, the love I can never know.
